Why Invest In Self Development?

We live in a privileged age: Everything we would ever want to know about anything that humankind has learnt is a click away (google/youtube).

Within my lifetime as I grew up, we still had door-to-door encyclopaedia salesman selling the snake oil of universal knowledge.

I would suggest there is the locus of responsibility on all of us not to waste this golden area of ubiquitous and omnipresent knowledge and wisdom.

Are we building time into our schedule to learn, practice and grow our capabilities? Both in and outside the workplace?

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” – Mark Twain

How often have brought books (for the rest of this blog books are a proxy for, publications, podcasts, v-blogs, Audible.) the reading has remained an aspiration usurped by the urgency of our work and home life.

Plan in your time for self-development each week as part of a Weekly Planning Process and use the Early Morning Club as a disciplined approach to ensure the planned learning is actioned.

Don’t just get a book and put it up on our shelf, devour it, take notes, use highlight pens and post-it notes, fold pages, throw it in backpacks and suitcases when we travel, put it on the front seat of the car in case we have a few minutes. Great books become lifelong friends and stand multiple viewings. They move with us from college to our first apartment to our first home and then, if it’s really good, perhaps, one day we’ll give it to our own children—or to a friend in need.
